Halloween Fanatic? Tricks for Storing Costumes & Decorations

Pumpkins sitting on a porch

It’s the spookiest time of year, but storage doesn’t have to be scary. After all of the candy has been passed out, it will be time to put away the Halloween decorations until next year. Here are some tips for storing all of your favorite tricks and treats.

Costumes

  • Launder before storage; stains can wear at the fibers of costumes, and smells can linger for years to come. Gross!
  • Costumes should be completely dry before being stored to avoid mildew and mold.
  • Store them in airtight containers to prevent pests.
  • Make sure that items that require their shape to be kept aren’t crammed into a container. You can use bubble wrap or newspaper to help items such as hats or corset tops keep their shape.

Decorations

  • Just like costumes, decorations should be stored in airtight containers to prevent water, dust or pests from affecting your spooky décor.
  • Did you put out faux-spider webs? It’s recommended that those be thrown away and repurchased each year. If you feel that you must keep them, store them separately from other decorations as they may have latent moisture or hidden pests (like real spiders!).
  • All of your decorations should be clean and dry before storage, especially those used outdoors.
  • It seems simple, but label your containers. Consider using a uniquely colored storage container (we recommend pumpkin orange) so you know exactly what to look for when it’s time to decorate next year.
  • If your decorations include candles, store those separately.

Fog Machine

  • If your fog machine is going to be in storage for more than a few months, clean out the tank with distilled water and vinegar and let it dry before storing. If you’ll only be storing for a couple of months, the liquid can be left in the tank, but it must be stored in a temperature-controlled area to prevent freezing.
  • Store this item in its own container in the event of spillage or molding.

Don’t leave yourself open to any spooky surprises in your storage unit for next year. Keep your favorite decorations, costumes and creepy contraptions in mint condition year after year with a few easy tips and tricks. Happy Halloween!
