Top 3 RV Campgrounds in Both New Jersey and New York

Life moved inside about 24 months ago, and things are finally starting to open up again. One way to get out and vacation again is to take to the highway in an RV or camper.

Whether you are lucky enough to own your own, or you rent one for a couple of weeks, it’s never been a better way to see some of the U.S., while staying safe in your own bubble.

First, Camper and RV Basics

New to the RV / camper lifestyle? We’ve got you covered. Here are some basics and if you’re already an expert, jump to the next section for top RV campgrounds.

Campers

Whether you are buying a trailer that pulls behind your truck/minivan and cranks up and pops out, or a truck camper that slides onto your truck’s flatbed, both versions are a step up from a tent and have basic amenities like a small kitchen, sleeping area, seating area and a place to eat.

Fifth-wheel trailers are towed behind a large pickup truck, and require a special trailer hitch. The front extends into the truck bed. Some of these are as large as a small RV and range in size from 20 feet to over 40 feet in length, and many have pop-outs that extend from the sides to give you more room.

The advantage of pull-behind and fifth-wheel is once you are set up, you still have a separate vehicle if you want to tour around. The disadvantage is they can be a pain to set up and take down, parking, driving, turning, braking and backing into a spot takes some skill.

So make sure you find an empty parking lot and practice before you head out on the road, especially if you’ve never tried to back a trailer into a driveway before.

Recreational Vehicles (RVs)

Unlike campers, RVs have their own motor and you drive it like a (big) vehicle. RVs come in a variety of sizes, from a smaller camper-van (think VW minibus) to a full-sized, luxury RV that has more space than most condos and keep many a rock star happy on a tour. Amenities depend on size or class of RV.

  • Class A RVs have all the bells, whistles and amenities of home, such as full sized bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, air and heat and are built with similar construction to an 18-wheeler.
  • Class B RVs are more like camper vans, and some have slide outs to give more living space.
  • Class C RVs look like a fifth wheel, except the engine and RV are one unit.

Storing Your RV

When the traveling fun is over, what to do with your RV? Storage can be a challenge. If you have a double driveway or a larger backyard, you can usually store your camper at home in the off-season (unless there are regulations against it in your neighborhood). And if you live in New York City, RV parking is not going to be easy.

RVs take a large footprint, and have the same issues with the weather as cars do. Heat, wind, rain, snow and hail are no friends of your camper, and can damage the tires, vinyl and metal, even if you tuck it under a tarp.

So make sure to follow all the best practices of storing your RV by checking out our RV Storage Guide

And if you’re short on space, you can rent a self-storage spot in the off-season. The most common type of storage for an RV in a storage facility is going to be a regular parking spot, but there are other options and amenities that can be offered, as outlined in our RV Storage Guide:

In some cases, parking areas may be covered, offering protection from much of the rain, snow, and sun. The least common (and most expensive) is an enclosed, individual storage unit, which may include climate control (like our Haledon, NJ location) and electrical outlets.

Our storage guide also helps you understand how large of storage space you need based on your RV:

  • Class A - Largest RVs; can be longer than 40 feet
  • Class B - Smallest RVs; typically under 25 feet but still larger than a typical SUV
  • Class C - Mid-size RVs; ranging between 20 and 30 feet

Usually, an RV isn’t going to be taller than 13.5 feet, though it may be difficult to find indoor storage tall enough to accommodate this height.</blockquote>

Storage facilities may have more security features than your driveway, and can be an affordable option that doesn’t take a parking space away or wreck your grass.

If you want to play tourist in your own backyard, both New Jersey and New York offer many affordable options to camp and explore. And when you’re done with your adventures, check out Storage Post locations in New York and New Jersey for options in storing your RV, camper or trailer.
