How to Meet New People in Queens

Queens is the home of the New York Mets, Laguardia Airport and JFK Airport. It’s the second most populated New York City borough and the largest by area. Queens is a cool combination of the big city, beachfront and quiet suburban all rolled into one with a healthy dash of cultural diversity. Here are some tips for meeting new people in Queens.

If You Like the Nightlife

Queens Madness Karaoke of New York - With over 900 members, this Meetup group is a great way to go out, have fun, meet people and show off your singing skills. The group holds weekly events around Queens, so you can get to know the borough while you impress new friends.

The Moon Bar Rooftop - Located in The One boutique hotel in Flushing, a short 30 minutes from downtown Manhattan, and minutes away from the home of the Mets (Citi Field) The Moon Bar Rooftop gets 4 out of 5 stars on Yelp for atmosphere, custom cocktails and a great place to meet people. No hoodies or tank tops, though, so glam up!

If You’re Creative

Painting With a Twist - Learn to paint, sip some wine, make some friends. Painting parties have skyrocketed in popularity and can be a great way to meet new people in a low-pressure environment. Painting With a Twist offers in-studio events, paint-at-home kits and private events around various themes, from a day at the beach, date nights, paint your pet or trivia nights. Alcohol is available for purchase at the events.

Queens Night Market - Located in the New York Hall of Science in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, the Queens Night Market has approximately 100 vendors selling merchandise, food and arts and handicrafts, and also features live entertainment. It generally runs Saturday evenings but takes a three-week break when the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament is happening.

Socrates Sculpture Park - The Socrates Sculpture Park in Astoria is the brainchild of sculptor Mark di Suvero. In 1986, he created a large outdoor sculpture museum as a “community-engaged and accessible arts space dedicated to supporting artists in the production and presentation of public artworks.” Located on 5 acres of a former landfill, it was designated a public park by the City of New York in 1998. Exhibits aren’t permanent and the majority are built on-site, giving visitors the chance to see the creative process in action.

If You Like Sports

New York has lots of professional sports: Mets in the National Baseball League, Yankees in the American League and Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks in Basketball. Football has the Giants and the Jets, hockey has the New York Islanders and the Rangers, and Soccer has the Red Bulls and the New York City FC.

While the rivalry between the Yankees and the Boston Red Sox is the stuff of legends, the Mets-Philadelphia Phillies rivalry in the National League is just as fierce. The last time the Yankees and Mets played each other in the World Series was 2000, and the Yankees won that “subway series.”

With the home of the Mets in Queens at Citi Field, you can grab a hotdog, root for the home team and maybe even make some new friends.

If you’d much rather play than watch, the Queens Sports and Social League has your back. Whether you want to play bocce, flag football, bar games, softball or take up bowling, there are both social and competitive leagues to choose from. There are also online trivia nights.
