Long Island City, New York Amenities

Our Long Island City, New York location has a variety of self-storage units ranging from 3’ x 4’ lockers to extra large 12’ x 55’ units. Our staff can help you choose which is the right size for you.

Climate-Controlled Units

Sometimes New Yorkers experience all four seasons on the same day, and that temperature rollercoaster isn’t fun. It’s also not good for your possessions, so we ensure our climate-controlled storage units are kept at an average temperature of 78°F in the summer and 55°F in the winter to avoid any temperature extremes.

Ground Level/Drive-Up Units

So you get that one warm day in November, and you just know you’re about to get slammed with weather, so you want to put the seasonal decorations up. We have convenient ground level units that provide you with drive-up access so you can load and unload with ease. Pack away Jack Skellington, grab Rudolph and Frosty and be on your way.

Security Cameras

We have security cameras that work 24/7/365, because the safety of our customers and their possessions is our number one priority.

24-Hour Access

Are you a night owl or a morning person? Are you working the midnight shift, or do you need something urgently on the Sunday of a long weekend? Your unit, your choice, since our personal digital access codes give you access whenever you need it.

Motion-Activated Lighting

We have bright, motion-activated lighting in our facility, so you can see what you’re doing and see if there’s anyone around (and our cameras can see you). Plus, you won’t need to fumble for the flashlight on your phone while trying to open or close your unit in the dark.

Digital Security System

We use a digital security system with individual access codes. No code, no access. It's as simple as that. And to help you stay in the loop, we also send you a text whenever your unit is opened.

Elevators

Your mama was right about getting in elevators late at night, but no need to worry about that here. Only people with a digital access code can use the elevator, and our cameras will be watching you, anyway.  Our facility offers extra large freight elevators so you can fit most everything in one load!

Covered Indoor Loading Areas

There’s not much we can do to control the weather, but we can keep you out of it while you move your possessions. We have covered indoor loading areas to keep the weather out while you move in or out.

Fenced and Gated

Our Long Island City location is fenced and gated, and the gate only works with the digital access code. We have on-site parking as well, so you don’t need to worry about finding a parking spot.

Elevated Loading Area

Back up to the loading area, and you can walk right off the truck and onto the platform. Our elevated loading areas are designed to make your life easier. You can even borrow a dolly or hand cart to make the job go quicker.

No-Contact Rental/Online Bill Pay

You can rent a unit, sign the contract digitally and view and pay your bill online, all without ever getting out of your jammies. Well, you’ll have to get dressed eventually to use your storage unit, but then again, we won’t judge if you wear your panda bear onesie to move. Comfort is king, right?

Boxes, Packing and Moving Supplies

We have all the packing and moving supplies you need, including moving boxes, packing supplies, packing tape and bubble wrap (yay, bubble wrap!) to help you organize your move and your storage space.

Dollies and Hand Carts

Feel free to borrow a dolly or hand cart so you can move your possessions more easily to and from your storage unit.

Free Wi-Fi

Save your data plan. We offer free Wi-Fi for all our customers while they are on the premises.

Commercial Accounts

Small and medium business owners are our kind of people, and commercial accounts are welcome here!

Month-to-Month Rentals

Facing a home remodel and need a space to keep your stuff for a couple of months? Need to store your college dorm decor for the summer? We offer month-to-month, short- and long-term rentals.

Friendly, Knowledgeable Staff

Our staff can help you choose the right size self-storage unit, compliment you on your panda onesie or lend you the tape gun. They can even help people unfamiliar with the area to understand that Long Island City is in Queens, which is part of NYC, while Long Island is not (although it could have been but they voted not to, and it’s still a sore point, so…) Wait, where were we? Right, our staff members are great.

Getting to Our Long Island City, New York Location

Our Long Island City location used to be known as Storage USA, Extra Space Storage, and The Storage Company. It’s located in the borough of Queens, New York, on the banks of the East River with the lights of NYC in the distance. Long Island City is not actually part of Long Island, although geographically Queens is, but NYC likes to ignore that. The important thing to know: you have to specify Long Island CITY when you are trying to find us, or you will be really lost.

If you’re coming from Jackson Heights, Take the  I-278 W toward Brooklyn/Staten Island. Take exit 35 toward I-495 E/Greenpoint Ave, then merge onto Borden Ave/Queens Midtown Expressway, keep left to stay on Borden Ave/Queens Midtown Expressway. Do it two more times just to confuse your GPS. Eventually, after many left turns to stay on Borden Ave, turn right onto Starr Ave.

If you’re coming from Williamsburg, take the I-278 E/Brooklyn-Queens Expressway ramp on the left to Robert F. Kennedy Bridge/La Guardia Airport. Pull over and double check since the sign says Triborough Bridge. Merge onto I-278 E, keep right at the fork to stay on I-278 E, follow signs for I-495/Midtown Tun Eastern Long Island 48 St. Figure out Midtown Tun is actually Midtown Tunnel. Use the right two lanes to take exit 35 A to merge onto I-495 W toward Midtown Tunnel. Use the right two lanes to take exit 15 for Van Dam St. Merge onto Borden Ave/Queens Midtown Expressway, follow Borden Ave turning left a bunch of times to stay on Borden Ave before eventually turning right onto Starr Ave. Bless the inventor of the GPS and satellite directional apps.

If you’re coming from Maspeth, debate whether it’s MAYspeth, or MAHspeth. Giggle at GPS pronunciation regardless. Proceed to Borden Ave/Queens Midtown Expressway. Merge onto I-495 W via the ramp on the left to Manhattan. Use the right 2 lanes to take exit 15 for Van Dam St. Merge onto Borden Ave/Queens Midtown Expy.  Continue to follow Borden Ave, making many left turns, and turn right on Starr Ave.

What’s it Like in Long Island City, New York?

Long Island City has a bit of an identity problem, since it’s not part of Long Island, it’s the westernmost part of the borough of Queens. Okay, technically it’s STILL part of the geographical entity of Long Island and back in 1870, Long Island City was a happening place. It was the county seat, and the location of the jail, the court and a bunch of other things. The county of Queens encompassed a whole bunch of the geographic entity of Long Island.

In 1898, there was a vote to become part of the city of New York. Two-thirds of the county of Queens decided they were just fine without NYC, thanks, and became Nassau County on Long Island. One-third became the borough of Queens in New York City. “Long Island” continued to refer to Queens and Brooklyn until the geographic entity of Long Island started to develop, and took back the name. See, identity problem.

Niche.com gives Long Island City an A rating, and names it the 42 out of 229 best neighborhoods in NYC to live, and the 13th out of 229 most diverse. It earns top marks in diversity, good for family, outdoor activities, nightlife and health and fitness.  The median house value is $847, 571, but 83% of residents rent rather than own. Fifty-three percent of residents have a Bachelors degree or higher.

If you like culture and art, then Long Island City is the place to be. It’s the home of the Noguchi Museum, founded by Japanese sculptor Isamu Noguchi. It’s also the home of MoMA PS1,  an affiliate of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), which is dedicated to showcasing the art world’s most “experimental, thought-provoking art." Or you can go see the giant Pepsi-Cola sign that has been in Gantry Plaza State Park since 1936. The Pepsi plant closed in 1999, and the sign was removed from the factory. It was designated a New York City Landmark in 2016. You can also visit the Long Island sign, which was the last stop on the Long Island Railroad.
